JCVC Show 30th June 2007

Saturday 30th June started early for me, in fact I wasn't aware that there was a 6.30am on a Saturday! Dragging myself out of bed I opened the curtains hoping for a glorious sunny day, it is summer after all! Sadly the weather was as predicted, dull and cloudy! After a bleary eyed breakfast I went outside and whipped the cover off the Daimler and fired the old beast up! Eventually all 12 cylinders were firing nicely and the car had warmed up enough to move off. A quick run up to St Martins to pick up my friend Ian Rouxel and then down into town in good time for the boat, annoyingly the boat was going to be late getting in, so it was the usual long wait in the car park. We were joined by Chris Munro and his good lady Brenda and her two daughters who were keeping Chris company in 'Maggie' the Y type MG.
The boat finally arrived and we boarded what seemed to be a very packed ferry. Another spot of breakfast on board (hard to resist the smell of bacon!) The crossing was smooth and 50 minutes later we were docking in St Helier.
Once off the boat we pulled over to look at the map, or rather Chris did because we were following him.
Soon we were off, jousting with the local traffic, and finding out just what a big car the Daimler is to hustle around some of the narrow streets and annoying one way systems of our sister isle.
It was just as well that Chris more or less knew where we were going because frankly I'd have never found it! And by the time we did poor old 'Maggie' was pushing out quite a bit of steam, seems that Chris had not checked the rad before we left Guernsey and it was bordering on empty!
A small sign indicated that we had arrived at Trinity Parish Hall, Chris was waved through onto the show ground, I however was stropped. "What Year is this car?" asked a rather unfriendly marshal, "It's a 1984" I replied "Suppose so" he sniffed and indicated that I could also enter the show ground. In the back or my mind I couldn't help but think that maybe, just maybe, that wasn't the best way to greet someone who had just spent the last 3 hours travelling to your event!
Another more friendly marshal pointed me in the direction of the 1980's classics, so I parked the car only to have another marshal rush over to tell me to move it to the visitors parking as I was too late to enter the show! "Mate" I replied "I have just come over for this show, it's staying here!" thankfully the show organiser John Graham is a nice easy going chap and things were soon smoothed over!
The show ground itself was large, but because of the appalling weather forecast exhibits and visitors to the event were a bit thin on the ground, Judging got on the way and my friend Ian was roped into helping judge the vehicles on display, a task that he really took seriously and was enjoying. At this point I was thinking that I should have made some effort to clean up the Daimlers engine bay, but hey I was over for the show, I caught up with Ken Surcof, and got to meet my opposite number in Jersey 'Carole Keenan', who has the duel task of Chairman and Newsletter Editor. I spent my time walking around taking pictures, and chatting with the odd owner, there were some vehicles on sale from Le Riche Restoration, including a rather nice Ford Mustang Convertible.
There was a raffle, with plenty of prizes, and a 'Feel the Car Part' in the bag competition The weather held off for most of the afternoon, but broke just as the prize giving got on the way. It poured down! And most people took shelter in their cars or under cover at the club tent
Once the prizes were dished out the show finished, We said our goodbyes and headed back to St Helier for a bite to eat, before the long wait for the boat home, an even longer wait as it was running 40 minutes late, and because of bad weather the next day, packed tight with vehicles! The queue of vehicles waiting to go on the ferry was massive! And it took nearly an hour to get to the check in at Condor, what I can reveal is that the Daimler ran faultlessly despite all the stop start driving she never got close to over heating.
Got back home just after 11pm, it was the end of a very long day, it was nice to be at a show that I hadn't had to help organise! So my thanks to John Graham and the rest of the team at the JCVC, who did all the hard work!
